LEARN TO SEW Tuesdays

This class is for absolute beginners and people who wish to refresh and extend their sewing skills. You will learn sewing techniques and terminology , how to interpret and understand pattern instructions , how to use a machine , sizing ,choosing fabrics and much more. You will complete a simple item to get you going and become enthused to make individual garments / projects of your choice e.g; quilts, dress-ups , soft furnishings and accessories , toys , altering and individualizing your creations, .All with group and individual tuition . At the end of the course you will have caught the " sewing bug " and have the skills to carry on on your own or return for a further term to sew with a group and an experienced tutor's guidance.

Course Requirements:

Fabric, Scissors, Bernina bobbin or bring your own sewing machine if you have one, Quick unpick, some scrap fabric, thread to match your fabric (only Mettler or Gutermann sewing thread can be used in the class machines and these are the best quality to ensure the best garment), pins, tape measure, pattern, fabric and any other requirements.

Some good patterns to choose from are:  Pyjama Pants,  Simplicity 9127 or 1563 or 9129 or 3935,  Bag  Simplicity  9308 or 9298, Apron Simplicity 9302 or 9301 or 9411.  If not available at Spotlight or  Morelands,  Fabrics  www.patternpostie.co.nz is very good and prompt and a very reasonable courier fee.     If you are unable to find these patterns, then any other basic pattern in any other brand will be ok (try to avoid Burda if possible). Patterns should be 'simple' or 'easy'. Fabric and any requirements (buttons, elastic etc) as listed on the back of the pattern. Please wash and iron your fabric before your first class.

This course is supported by the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) to assist with literacy and numeracy needs of students. You must attend 80% of the class. At the same time we hope you will learn other useful and interesting skills and have a lot of fun learning with us.
