Arts

The Arts are highly valued by Fraser High School, both as key areas of learning and as well supported co-curricular activities. We have a large Arts Faculty, many of whom are practicing artists and performers. Within the classroom, students have access to up to date digital technology, allowing them to produce work to a very professional standard.

Students within the Arts Faculty are treated as developing artists, and offered a range of opportunities to perform and exhibit their work in a public setting. In turn we have a high expectation of commitment to practice and skill development. We consistently see these expectations met, and exceeded, with students gaining top grades in NCEA and Scholarship examinations, and excelling in tertiary study.

The school timetable has been designed to allow students to explore many Arts options. The population of our school allows us to offer a wide range of subjects within the Arts at senior level, including Drama, Design, Painting and Photography to Scholarship level.

Fraser has ten teachers dedicated to delivering the Arts curriculum in the school. Over 35 other staff also contribute to co-curricular activities in this area of the school, enabling students to participate in award winning performances for Shakespeare Festival, School Productions (including recent successful seasons of Disney's High School Musical, Little Shop of Horrors and Grease), Stage Challenge, Theatre Sports, and talent quests. Involvement in these events helps students to explore possible careers in the Arts, as well as providing them with lasting positive memories of their time at secondary school.

Dance and Drama

Students of Dance and Drama have the opportunity to choreograph, devise, create and perform in front of live audiences. They experience a range of styles and genres, and learn about technologies such as costume and lighting. Both Dance and Drama are offered all the way to NCEA Level 3.

Music

With three full time Music teachers and an itinerant Music programme, music opportunities abound at Fraser. Students have the opportunity to compose, perform, and record music using a range of up to date digital technology, including a large suite of Apple computers.

Visual Arts

Students of the Visual Arts have the opportunity to participate in exhibitions, competitions and design projects at Fraser. Within the classroom students have access to up to date digital technology including Apple computers and digital SLR cameras. We have a particularly high achieving Photography Department, with four students gaining Scholarship in the most recent exams.
