Bullet journals, gratitude journals, art journals, travel journals, photo journals, notebooks, whānau recipe books, the list is endless of what you can make with a few fundamental book-making skills.
In this course, you will learn hands-on about the properties of paper, different binding techniques, tips and tricks of making covers and the limitless creative ways these skills can be expressed in your own book making journey.
Each week you will learn a new technique, through making different styles of books, to complete over the 8 weeks your own custom full size journal of choice. By the end of the course you will have created a Japanese stab bound notebook, a travel journal, a leather key chain notebook, a photo journal, and finally your creative book of choice.
In addition to the vertical book press, bees wax, glue, thread, waste paper and marking out tools provided for you to use in class you will also need to bring along your own paper of choice, hardboard and a basic binding kit. You will learn in week 1 what kinds of paperwork and what doesn’t, and where to buy your tools and board. You will also have the opportunity to purchase all the tools as a bundle (bone folder, creaser, needles, awl, A3 cutting mat and Scotch titanium knife) for $35 and the hardboard for $6.
Who am I? Why do I love books so much? Whilst studying my Art and Science degrees I discovered a need to create my own custom journals that could be used for the diverse mediums and disciplines I was working in. I’m now all grown up, sort of, and work as both an artist and an engineer, and own a company that creates custom journals and portfolios for artists and creative thinkers. As a bibliophile my passion for book binding is not just limited to journals but encompasses the traditional arts such as leather work, embossing, gilding and fore edge art which I will always be happy to share with you. You can check out some of the books and portfolios we make on Instagram and Facebook @kiwarti .
This course is supported by the TEC (Tertiary Education Commission) to assist with literacy and numeracy needs of students. You must attend 80% of the class. At the same time we hope you will learn other useful and interesting skills and have a lot of fun learning with us.
